Looking Forward to Looking Back

All American apple pie nestled within a twisted twig wreath decorated with real red apples and a woven red, white and blue ribbon. The words "We Remember" are written at one end of the ribbon. Uncle Bernie, the Saint Bernard dog and Holly, the Samoyed puppy from Evergreen Valley are located in a lower and upper quadrant of the wreath.

Life’s echo is reflected in a rearview mirror, but the windshield reveals the road ahead. The view from behind plants our roots. The windshield stretches our wings.

The scent of warm memories, the slice of life, the circle of love. . . we remember

There is a quiet kind of hope that lives in the space between today and tomorrow — the hope that the moments we’re living now will someday become the memories that warm us. I’ve been thinking about that lately, about how we look forward to looking back. How even the tender places in our hearts, the ones shaped by loss or longing, can glow when touched by remembrance. And how the simple rituals we create — a wreath, a ribbon, a pie cooling on the counter — become the gentle threads that tie our days together.

We talk a lot about time, and life paints time in a variety of ways. We hold the brush. We choose the colors.

Childhood paints time brightly and without limits. There is always time for everything — ticking endlessly while we wait in anticipation.

As the wind breezes through those childhood days, perspective shifts. Days are no longer too long, and vacations fly past us.

Finally, the days of golden sunsets settle upon us, and we choose to slow down. We understand that the time is now. It is the only time. Each second that passes is another memory made. It becomes what we make it to be.

With a warm, storybook, watercolor flourish, last week’s post painted the seasons of the heart. When I look at that image, I’m reminded that our own seasons move in circles — returning, repeating, reshaping us — yet they still ask us to keep moving.

Moving forward is very different from moving on. One motion carries our memories with us; the other asks us to leave them behind. If you’ve ever lost someone you love, you’ve likely heard the words, “It’s time to move on.” Those words unsettled me. Moving on felt like letting go — forgetting — and that was never an option.

In time, I found a soft, quiet place in my heart where grief could rest without overwhelming me. And from that place, I began to understand that moving forward — with my memories gently stitched to the journey — was the truest direction. It allowed the circle to continue, not close.

When you look at the image accompanying today’s post, try to see it with the fresh eyes of your heart. Let those two quiet words — “we remember” — settle gently, like a soft echo.

Focus on the wreath’s circular shape and ponder its quiet, infinite pathway. Notice how it offers no beginning and no end, only the steady promise of return.

See the dry, brown, seemingly lifeless tangle of twigs paired with the vibrantly alive apples — a reminder that memory often holds both ache and sweetness at once.

Feel the welcoming presence of our two new friends from the valley, each joining the circle from a different point, yet connected all the same.

And remember that we, too, belong to that circle, even if we’ve never met. We are joined by our shared humanity, our stories, and the simple truth that we all have something — and someone — to remember.

Have your eyes drifted to the apple pie in the center of the wreath? It’s a simple reminder that one seemingly ordinary slice of life can spark a memory — a scent, a taste, a moment that lingers long after the plate is empty.

Does the apple pie speak to you?

Maybe it whispers something familiar. Maybe it says, “A scoop of vanilla ice cream would make this even better” — another gentle reminder that some things truly are sweeter together.

Today, I’m merging two worlds that beautifully coexist. Each begins with the heart and has no end, because love doesn’t have an end.

Evergreen Yuletide is the outpouring of the love of my mother and sister — love that still lives in my heart. It is the echo of their memory, the essence of all they shared with me. Its purpose is simple and steady: to help others see light, find joy, and carry forward their own light. One match can dispel the darkness. Many candles can brighten the world.

And speaking of worlds, last week you met Bernie and Holly from the unfolding valley — a peaceful place that reflects the home we hope to build within ourselves. It isn’t always perfect, but the inhabitants of this valley widen our view and open our hearts to the joy of being perfectly imperfect.

Well, friends, all things do come full circle. I am so grateful for the time we shared together, and before we ride the current of another week’s cycle, let’s gather round to savor the sweetness that can be found in a slice of life. It’s equally important to remember that love can provide the needed sweetness when that slice of life turns sour.

Right about now, I have a hankering for a slice of apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream — I bet you do too. I wish I could knock on your door and serve you that delectable dessert, but alas, my storybook magic doesn’t work in this world.

Instead, I’ve prepared a beautiful watercolor keepsake — an All‑American Apple Pie recipe card. Every morsel, from crust to filling, is meant to bubble over into a wonderful memory.

This recipe card is my gift to you – safely tucked into Your Secret Garden.

Down in the valley, Uncle Bernie and Holly share that same vision. Today’s puzzle piece comes from the valley’s apple orchard, a quiet echo of the sweetness at the center of our wreath.
