Morning glories lean toward the light, and somewhere beyond the stone wall, a gentle rustle stirs the valley. The day begins not with fanfare, but with presence — a soft reminder that joy often arrives before we even see its face.

🌿 Opening Reflections: The Dog Days of August

I’m sending you a hearty welcome, along with a warm greeting from the valley… and I do mean warm! This summer has brought both stretches of comfortable weather and waves of high humidity. Just this past week, heat advisories reminded us that even though the thermometer read in the 80s, the heat index made it feel closer to the high 90s — perhaps even 100°.

I do love summer, but I’ll admit I’m grateful for the two window air conditioners that keep the house comfortable — one at each end, balancing the heat with a steady hum of cool air.

Reflecting on these “dog days of summer,” I remember that during this same time last year, I worked on a yard project. That project involved characters I was creating, whom I then called The Dogs of Joy. Inspired by the song The Twelve Days of Christmas, I chose twelve breeds and imagined creative gifts that matched each number of the song in a dog-themed way.

I designed twelve 5×7 cards, each featuring a dog and its numbered theme. Once finished, I laminated them, punched holes, twisted rope, and strung sections of three cards each with Christmas ribbon. I repurposed a birdfeeder pole to hang each set from its arms, and added solar-powered mason jar fairy lights to the tips.

It was whimsical and charming — until the rain came. My careful trimming of the lamination had broken the seal, leaving the cards vulnerable. What had been a joyful display became a mangled mess of bleeding ink. As is typical, frustration is the first emotion to appear. I had invested so much time, and I thought this could be a future craft product to share… but not so.

Yet, as often happens, after the heavy rains came a rainbow. I didn’t realize it then, but in the months that followed, the Dogs of Joy evolved into something far greater. That project became the foundation of Evergreen Valley. The Dogs of Joy grew into Uncle Bernie and his Buddies — the puppies of Evergreen Valley.

Just as life evolves, Evergreen Yuletide grows month by month, week by week, and even day by day. Each component develops deeper meaning, and as new paths open in my heart and mind, I shift gears to follow them. Sometimes I feel frustrated that I can’t move fast enough to complete all I envision. In those moments, I return to my deeply rooted philosophy of balance. Let me share how that balance worked for me this week.

🏡 Studio News

The studio is the heart of my day. Creative moments can consume hours, balanced by my caregiving responsibilities. Last week I shared that I purchased a standalone design program for my iMac. This week, I explored its features by working on new projects. Every program has quirks, but I’m enjoying Pixelmator Pro and slowly moving my production from Canva into this new space. My goal is to learn its features fully, to become a confident graphic designer producing professional-quality products. This week, I completed two designs based on the same concept, each for a different holiday.

As a self-proclaimed lover of Christmas, I began experimenting with an item that has become difficult to find: money envelopes. I often think about items from the past that would still be useful today. My mother’s budget book system comes to mind — better than any spreadsheet or vision board. It was purposeful and reliable. We were never wealthy, but every bill was paid on time, and when rainy days appeared, there was always a little tucked away in an envelope. I reflect fondly on how much I learned simply by watching her everyday actions.

That reflection, and a conversation with a friend, led me to design what were once called Christmas money envelopes. Never content to simply copy, I added a twist — and so, the cardvelope was born. After experimenting with Christmas designs, I realized other holidays would arrive first.

The next big holiday is Halloween. I’m not a fan of how dark the holiday has become, so my designs reflect my watercolor aesthetic and lighter, happier themes. Unlike traditional money envelopes, the cardvelope is both a card and an envelope. Its generous size fits more than cash or checks. I designed a card insert with a seasonal verse, plus space to sign or add a sentiment. That space can also hold a gift card securely, packaged in something more unique than a standard holder.

And it doesn’t end with Halloween. Thanksgiving and Hanukkah cardvelopes are already on the design board. My goal is to create sets for every major holiday, for gifts to those in special occupations, and even to honor my mother’s budget book system. With each set, I’ll also share a downloadable list for multiple uses. Evergreen Yuletide dreams of building a collection of beautiful, useful items that make life easier and give you the chance to share something meaningful with someone else.

Learning was a multifaceted part of my week’s adventures. As I worked on the listing for my newly designed Halloween cardvelopes, I discovered an eye‑opening lesson: there is always a cost to convenience. On Etsy, you can choose to automatically renew your listings or manually relist them. The platform defaults to auto‑renew, which seems helpful because you don’t have to watch for expired items. But what looks like a small fee can add up quickly over the course of a year, especially if you have multiple shops and dozens of listings.

At first glance, automatic renewal feels like it should keep your items visible. What I learned, however, is that once an item has been relisted multiple times without steady sales, it no longer fits the algorithm’s pattern and becomes nearly invisible to shoppers. Frequent sellers remain strong in the algorithm, but one‑of‑a‑kind or occasional items are better managed manually.

The Evergreen Yuletide Etsy shop is still moving through its conversion from the former PMPPrintableDesigns. Many of my early products are creations from a course that I took when entering the market. Today, I see them as learning projects. Since I don’t enjoy following trends, most of those items will not be relisted. I am remaking some to match my brand’s aesthetic, but the rest will quietly retire.

I’ve wrestled with the question of holiday products and whether they should remain listed year‑round. There are pros and cons to both approaches. I believe I’ve found a solution that balances my needs with those of my customers. Each holiday listing will be available for a four‑month duration, timed to the season. While out‑of‑season purchases are possible, the numbers tell a different story: over the past year, It is disheartening to spend more than $200 on renewals for items likely seen by very few shoppers.

To address this, I’m building a PDF catalogue that will feature every listing. Soon, when someone purchases a printable item, they’ll automatically receive a download link to the catalogue and can request a custom order at any time. Shoppers who purchase physical items will receive a message with the same link. The catalogue will have regular updates and will grow alongside the shop’s inventory. This approach saves valuable dollars while still allowing customers to access any item during any season.

🎨 Tools for Graphic Art

Working extensively this past week with Pixelmator Pro, I am now beginning to search for a companion tool to use with this program. Writing, drawing, or painting with a mouse is quite the challenge. Making it work consumes a great deal of time, and necessitates many attempts to achieve the quality that I desire.

With that said, I am presently researching different models so that I can purchase a tablet and pen that will connect to my iMac. This will facilitate being able to use all components of my new graphic design program. Throughout the course of the next several months, my goal is to become proficient with. Pixelmator Pro. Thankfully, this additional tool’s price is not outrageous, so long as you source an off-brand product that has very high ratings. Maybe next week I will be able to share with you the choice that I make.

As you can see, both the studio and the shop were busy this week, and I’m glad to say every endeavor was productive. Now it’s time to turn our eyes back to the valley, where today you’ll meet another special friend.

Evergreen Valley has been unfolding before you for sixteen weeks. Each week has revealed another piece of the puzzle — a glimpse of its beauty and an introduction to new companions. This week, Glory steps forward to find a home in your heart. She isn’t worried about leaving the valley, because she knows its peace dwells within you as well. This gentle English sheepdog loves her morning glory flowers, her namesake, and she carries their brightness into each day.

Glory is a sweet soul who finds a way to love every single moment. In the near future, you’ll learn much more about her and all of her friends. But before that, you’ll meet her beloved Uncle Bernie and discover how the valley became evergreen. His story is written, proofread, and polished — waiting patiently to be shared. This week I’ve been working on the illustrations, and I believe that by the end of the coming week they will all be complete. I look forward to assembling the story and publishing it under the Evergreen Yuletide name.
