Happy June, everyone! After a season when winter lingered like an unwanted visitor and refused to make room for spring, the summer heat has finally arrived. Longer daylight hours and lighter clothing lift the spirit. It may not be officially summer yet, but it has certainly arrived in our hearts.
Speaking of seasons, it’s a wonderful time to remember that Evergreen Yuletide is more than a season. It is the essence of Christmas joy — wrapped, carried, and opened year‑round. Major celebrations don’t happen every day, but every day holds a small celebration of its own.
Each season brings its own sense of expectation. Each month wears its own personality. We may have favorites, but to truly enjoy life, we learn to find joy in every season, every day, every minute. Look for the little things that can flip a frown. It doesn’t matter whether the moment is past or present — acknowledging it is what allows us to live with more joy and gather more memories worth keeping.
If you live in the good old USA, this is a special year. Many adults reading this were children during the bicentennial. Maybe you remember parades, fireworks, or the excitement of a country celebrating together. Perhaps you still have a bicentennial quarter tucked away. For others, this 250th birthday is the first major national celebration of their lifetime — and if they’re young enough, they may be here for the 300th.
Your Fourth of July holiday can be extra special this year. Start planning an outdoor celebration that can easily move indoors if Mother Nature has other ideas. Don’t overwhelm yourself — when you divide the tasks, you multiply the joy.
If you begin now, you can gather a small team of holiday helpers. These same helpers can become part of every celebration throughout the year. Everyone has something to contribute. Start by listing the most important elements of your gathering, then recruit your team. Someone has to initiate the festivities, but that someone doesn’t have to carry the entire celebration alone.
Here are a few planning areas you can assign to your core team of contacts:
- Appetizers & snacks — simple, sharable, and easy to prep
- Main meal — grilled, baked, or potluck-style
- Desserts — classic favorites or something new
- Paper goods & utensils — the unsung heroes of every gathering
- Tables, chairs & setup — foldable, portable, or borrowed
- Beverages — chilled, refreshing, and plentiful
- Outdoor/indoor games — fun for all ages
- Nighttime activities — campfire, sing‑along, or a movie under the stars
- Special accommodations — thoughtful touches that make everyone feel welcome
